Livestock Research Institute: The government should establish clear regulations to encourage circular agriculture.
In response to the cautious reply from the Livestock Department, Jia Yuxiang candidly stated that foundational research must continue. At this stage, the habits of the black soldier fly have been studied, and an efficient egg collection model has been developed based on these habits. "Collecting 10 kilograms of eggs in a day is definitely not a dream," he said.
The next step for the Livestock Research Institute will be to study derivatives of the black soldier fly, such as insect oil, chitin, and animal proteins. "The entire black soldier fly can be utilized, and each component has the potential to develop into an industry." The institute will invest in research to explore the potential for black soldier fly industry development.
However, Jia Yuxiang also pointed out that the black soldier fly circular economy is a new industrial chain for Taiwan. "The biggest challenge for the entire industry is the lack of clear regulations." Although the black soldier fly is already recognized by the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine as a legal feed additive, scaling up production requires coordinated discussions among the Council of Agriculture, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Environmental Protection Administration. "Without clear regulations, businesses cannot proceed," he said.
"The right thing must be upheld by someone," said Jia Yuxiang. When it comes to the circular economy, the black soldier fly is undoubtedly a symbol, and many have already been researching it. "Whether the black soldier fly is beneficial, and whether its application to the livestock industry is feasible, these are questions that can be tested and are absolutely open to public evaluation," he emphasized.
Currently, it's not only private entities with experience but also the Livestock Research Institute's Nutrition Division and the Fisheries Research Institute that are making efforts. We hope to have more practical examples available for discussion.
